PICKLING AND PASSIVATION TROUBLESHOOTING  During, following or indeed before the cleaning operation all sorts of strange things can occur as a result of the chemicals used. Our technical library gives a variety of examples that SRL has encountered along its way. This list is by no means complete - these pages will be continually updated as we/you experience other strange phenomena.

Mild Steel Fixtures and Fittings

Pickling Mild Steel Fixtures

Identification

Often a fabrication is designed with dissimilar metal section to minimise costs. The dissimilar metal is often mild steel/carbon steel such as flanges, bolts, saddles, support brackets and legs. If the fabrication required pickling then these areas need to be masked and protected from the aggressive pickling process.

Possible Detriment

The only real detriment to the fabrication is that the pickling process will dissolve/etch the mild steel at a rapid pace and totally dissolve it away in a matter of hours in an immersion bath situation. If thickness is lost then the design calculations will change since the cross sectional thickness will have changes. These dissimilar features are usually external parts and don't form product contact parts.

Solution

If the fabrication requires pickling by immersion method then the area can be masked with a special masking agent - SR 2001. This product will seal the surface even in the most aggressive environments. If the fabrication requires manual pickling by spray gel or pickling paste then the mild steel features can be masked using adhesive tape and plastic sheeting.

Method: Request product application data sheet for SR 2001 "masking agent".   Tel: 0161 368 6191
