Ultrasonic cleaning is a process that uses ultrasound (usually from 20–400 kHz) and an appropriate cleaning solvent to clean items. The ultrasound can be used with just water, but use of a solvent appropriate for the item to be cleaned and the type of soiling present enhances the effect

Ultrasonic Cleaning Process

An ultrasonic cleaner uses an electrical generator and transducers that convert the electrical energy into high frequency sound waves.

The transducers are attached to a stainless steel tank filled with aqueous solution to produce millions of tiny bubbles.

When the bubbles impact against the surface of the material they implode and release massive amounts of energy in a process known as “cavitation”. The diameter of the bubbles is controlled by frequency. At 30kHz the bubble radius is 110 microns reducing to 41 microns at 80 kHz. In other words, the higher the ultrasonic frequency the tinier the cavitation bubbles. The cavitation effect breaks the bonds between the surface and the contaminants removing dirt, grease, rust, and grime away from any kind from hard surfaces placed in the solution.

The cavitation effect can be tested using Aluminium Foil. After a few minutes processing perforations or dimples in the surface of the foil are a positive indication of ultrasonic cavitation.

One of the primary benefits of ultrasonic cleaners lies in how quickly and efficiently they can clean intricate instruments. The microscopic bubbles can penetrate deep into hard to reach surfaces, yet the cavitation action does not damage the surface.Ultrasonic cleaning produces less waste than conventional cleaning methods and is much safer for both the user and the environment.Ultrasonic typically operate at an ultrasonic frequency of 37 to 42 kHz (37,000 to 42,000 cycles per second).The ultrasonic cleaning process is more efficient and gentle to the equipment than most other cleaning processes. Since ultrasonic cleaning occurs on every surface in contact with the liquid, it also has the advantage of reaching inside complex parts and crevices inaccessible by manual cleaning.
