Plastic Film / Burn

Pickling Plastic Film or Burn

Identification

This problem usually comes about when the fabricator or welder doesn't peel back the protective film from the stainless steel sheet surface far enough. The heat generated from the welding process burns the film at the edge close to the weld seam and the glue adheres very tight to the steel. If the film is removed completely then the residual glue from the film can still cause issues.

Possible Detriment

Apart from the fact that the surface will look unsightly and indeed, if a food/pharmaceutical bearing surface it will look unhygienic.

The Film will act as a crevice and in certain environments will give rise to corrosion attack.

Solution

The film can either be mechanically removed from the surface ensuring that a fine grit is used. Alternatively, Acetone or other solvent can sometimes help. Nontheless the area adjacent to the weld should be cleaned with solvent to remove any clue residue prior to welding.Method: Wipe the offending area down using one of the solvents listed.
